Keys are
Mount VBoxGuestAdditions.iso in Storage: CDRom under settings for the VM – only then will this file show up on the Ubuntu client then:
sudo bash ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run

Also need to add group to user trying to access the share – root will have permissions by default
sudo usermod -aG vboxsf mike
