It appears Amazon’s new release of Linux – Amazon Linux 2 – is mostly compatible with RHEL 7 and other RHEL 7 clones (CentOS 7, Oracle Linux 7).
So what I did was google – “wordpress installation on RHEL 7″… I found among other things this blog entry which worked for me on an EC2.
Amazon’s description of the image is as follows:

I followed this blog – and it worked on Amazon Linux 2 as well. This just released version of Linux is systemd and again apparently mostly RHEL 7 compatible.
